Robert Wise-Jerome Robbins/WEST SIDE STORY Back on the Big Screen

Andre Soares

Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins' West Side Story, NCM Fathom and Turner Classic Movies will present a one-night screening of the multiple Oscar winner in movie theaters nationwide at 7:00 pm (local time) on November 9.

The West Side Story presentation includes a new Turner Classic Movies original production, followed by MGM’s 50th Anniversary restoration of the 1961 United Artists release. (MGM bought UA in the '80s, following Michael Cimino's costly Heaven's Gate fiasco.)

Starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, and Academy Award winners Rita Moreno and George Chakiris, West Side Story won a total of 10 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Direction.

As per the TCM press release , tickets will become available on Friday, October 7, via TCM.com. Go here for more information and a list of all the theatres across the US .

The closest theatre to me, which isn't all that close, is selling them for $12.50 apiece.

The November 9th National re-release of the film West Side Story:
I attended the event here in Boston with a friend, who'd seen it 50 years ago, when it first came out, but hadn't seen it since. We both enjoyed every minute of it, despite the fact that they tickets cost over 12 dollars apiece.

It was a little pricey but I'd pay for it again.

Hey, guess what! The film West Side Story, along with a bunch of other great old classic films of that general period (the 1960's), has been digitally restored, remastered, cleaned up and reprinted into a high-definition masterpiece. It's beautiful!

Digital projection is definitely the wave of the future! I also might add that the digitally-restored, HD, remastered versions of the film West Side Story that I've recently seen, were in even better shape than the copy of the film that they showed at the 50th-year Anniversary screening that they showed here in Boston!
