These days the battle cry in Hollywood appears to be "Remake!" as evidenced by projects like the new Amazing Spider-Man and talk of an updated Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If you were a studio executive contemplating a remake of West Side Story, who would you choose to play Tony, Maria, Anita, Bernardo or Riff.

With the talent evinced by projects like Glee and High School Musical - who has the vocal range, the acting chops and the flashing feet to bring this tale to life again?

I think I would probably cry "Sacrilege!" if anyone tried to remake the movie. Stage play revivals are one thing, but the movie is quite another. The stage is always fluent and changing, but the movie is always there, always accessible, with the cast captured in time.

That said, I don't think I'm even familiar enough with young actors of today who would be in the right age bracket for the West Side Story characters. I'm more familiar with older actors of today, but I can't think of anyone off-hand whom I would choose to play any of the adults.

I think a remake would be interesting, if they could find the right people. And it would be nice to have leads who were vocally up to singing their own songs, I know there's a 19 year old actress/singer named Selena Gomez who might be up to playing either Maria or Anita.

Actually, this train of thought came about after reading that there's a remake of Romeo and Juliet in the works.

Ah yes, I know about Selena. She could be an interesting choice, if she has the right vocal range. I don't think I've heard any of her songs....

LOL. It seems like a new Romeo and Juliet comes out every few years or so. I'll be curious to see how this one fares, though.

It's a miracle! It's actually going to let me comment! After five days!

She has a very nice voice! Yes, I could see her in a remake. I would hope they wouldn't have the songs in Spanish, though; that's one change in the revival I just can't agree with. Maybe it makes things more accurate, but it also isolates people. I like being able to understand what's being said.

Although in a film they can make use of subtitles, which is something they couldn't do when it was on Broadway. I actually like the idea of Spanish in a film, as long as there are clear subtitles.

Yes, subtitles are a wonderful thing. If they did decide to use Spanish, I would hope they would have subtitles. Some things, such as the TV series Combat!, don't seem to.

Nods. While hunting out video clips I've found several Broadway/Theatre performers that IMO would do a great job as well as Josefina - Sierra Boggess, Haley Carlucci, John Viscardi, Matthew Hydzik among them.

And if I could pick a director I would go with Joss Whedon. If you look at "Walk Through the Fire" from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode Once More With Feeling, it's almost a direct steal from The Quintet. Plus, he had Amber Tamblyn working on the series so I've always wondering if Dad was hanging around the set, I could totally see Joss being all fangirly.
