By now, some of you are probably aware that I've been hanging around the FF.net Movie category for West Side Story. (I'm the kook who pretty much adores Lieutenant Schrank.) For those who aren't aware, and are interested, this is what I've been coming up with:

The Things You Don't Say Post-movie. A bad storm is the catalyst to throwing two of the most unlikely people together in a car. Maria is still mourning Tony; Lieutenant Schrank is weary from the continuing gang problems.

The Worth of Souls Post-movie. Lieutenant Schrank is shot by a young gang member while trying to break up a rumble. This throws the Jets into an awkward and uncomfortable position and they, as well as Krupke and others, wonder whether Schrank will survive. (This one is not yet complete; I need to put up part 3....)

Running on Empty Lieutenant Schrank is often not the most pleasant person to deal with, if you happen to be in a street gang. But if something absolutely pushed him past the point of endurance, how might he change for the worse?

I'm not sure what the time period is for the last one. But in any case, is it bad that, even though I know Schrank is going too far at points in it, at the same time I kind of like/agree with his approach?

Eeee, thank you! Yay, that's awesome that he made the list. He deserves some positive recognition.

And thank you for the information on this book too! I hadn't known it existed, but I was wondering if there was one. Is the book kind/fair to him?

I'd say fair.

Good to hear! I am still rather in disbelief over that other person describing him as an out-and-out villain. Just ... no.

Are there pretty pictures? And does it tell anything about how the movie cast was assembled? I've heard about Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer; I don't think I know how anyone else was chosen. (And of course I'm dying to know how they ended up choosing Simon Oakland.)

Amazon.com has the book for an awesome price! And it sounds so fascinating! I'm definitely interested in it for the intellectual factors alone, but that other stuff would be icing on the cake.

I thought it was a terrific book, it doesn't really go into detail about why they picked Simon Oakland but it does go into detail about the major players - NW, RB, RT, RM & GC.

There are pictures but they are b&w, there's a really neat one of RT about 2 feet off the ground in front of the other Jets.

It sounds fun! I am definitely making plans to buy it when I get my next batch of stuff from Amazon (which I hope will be in the next few days).

(Oh, and by the way, I attempted to post a comm message a few days ago. I'm not sure whether it got lost in the queue or lost in cyberspace in general.)

No, I never saw it. Please feel free to re-submit.
