Something's Coming… The Celebrated Musical West Side Story Hits Lyric’s Stage in 2019

Broadway at Lyric continues in the 2018/19 Season with the timeless American musical West Side Story! The iconic work by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim is a classic tale of Romeo and Juliet-inspired forbidden love that has been adored for decades. ...This highly anticipated Lyric premiere is already selling fast, so don’t miss your chance to get tickets today!

Premiering in 1957, West Side Story is one of Bernstein’s everlasting musical legacies that has touched generations. The musical masterpiece is packed with explosive and exuberant dance sequences as two rival gangs battle each other, while young lovers Tony and Maria persist in longing for “a place for us.” Bernstein’s music and Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics illuminate every scene, from the romance of “Maria” and “Tonight” to the sarcastic exultation of “America” and wisecracking wit of “Gee, Officer Krupke.”

Following the triumphant run of Jesus Christ Superstar, which marked the culmination of Lyric’s 17/18 season, audiences can anticipate more onstage thrills next spring.

This new coproduction with Houston Grand Opera and Glimmerglass Festival promises captivating singing and dancing that offers a feast for the eyes and ears. Directed by Francesca Zambello, the production recently premiered at Houston Grand Opera and was met with exuberant praise:

The Houston Chronicle hailed the production as a “masterpiece,” saying it “transcends the stage and achieves something pretty close to sublime.”

Texas Classical Review called it a “stylish success.”

Opera Warhorses said “[Zambello’s] dramatic realization…not only gives one a sense of the powerful hold this work had on mid-20th century audiences, but its continued relevance to contemporary audiences.”

Houston Press declared Julio Monge’s dance direction “revives [Jerome] Robbins's originals and makes the movement fresh.”
