West Side Story returning to theaters : See rare behind-the-scenes photos

Maureen Lee Lenker

Something’s coming, something good …

West Side Story is returning to movie theaters for two days only as part of Fathom Events and Turner Classic Movies’ TCM Big Screen Classics series. The beloved movie musical will play in select theaters June 24 and 27, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. local time both days.

The film will be presented in its original widescreen aspect ratio and include a mid-film intermission, as was featured in the original theatrical release. It will also include pre- and post-show commentary from TCM host Ben Mankiewicz. This title is a new addition to this year’s Big Screen Classics series, bringing the total to 14 films.

Based on the Broadway musical of the same name, West Side Story transposes Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to the streets of 1960s New York City, where the Montague-Capulet feud becomes a racially charged gang war between the white Jets and the Puerto Rican sharks. The film won 10 Oscars, including Best Picture and both supporting acting awards, for George Chakiris and Rita Moreno.

I've already purchased tickets for myself and my friends/family that I'll be going to WSS with.
I'm excited about seeing West Side Story on the great big, wide movie theatre screen, not only because it's my all time favorite movie, hands down, but because a film like the 1961 film version deserves, in fact, cries, to be viewed in a real movie theatre, on a great big, wide screen, with the lights down low, with other people, whether one knows them or not.

It's playing in select theatres all over the country. I totally recommend that all West Side Story fans go to see it.

Now, at the risk of being a "debbie downer", as i've already pointed out on other posts here on westsidestory.livejournal.com, I'm of the opinion that West Side Story is too iconic and too special a classic to be re-made by anybody, including Steve Spielberg, and should be left alone. Some people may think that I'm being politically and socially incorrect here, but that's their prerogative, and their opinion. I've got my own opinions on the idea of a re-make of the original 1961 film version of West Side Story, and it still stands.
