Something’s coming — and it’s some major musical nostalgia.
Fifty-five years ago Tuesday, Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise’s film adaptation of West Side Story premiered in — where else? — New York City. The iconic Hollywood musical went on to win 10 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor and Actress (for George Chakiris and Rita Moreno, respectively).

A reimagining of Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story takes place in Manhattan’s West Side in the late 1950s, where two rival gangs — the white Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks — fight for control of the neighborhood. When Maria, the younger sister of the Sharks’ leader Bernardo, falls in love with Tony, the best friend of the Jets’ leader Riff, the tension comes to a boiling point, and the turf war finally ends — but only in violence and tragedy.
In honor of the stunning film’s 55 years, we’ve devised a quiz by which you can test your memory of Steven Sondheim’s lyrics to Leonard Bernstein’s iconic songs. Good luck in advance getting “I Feel Pretty” out of your head for the rest of the day.
