79 Movies That Define New York City
Because it’s not all mob movies and Nora Ephron. (Though there is plenty of both.)

11. West Side Story (1961)

With all of its dancing and singing, West Side Story isn’t the most realistic depiction of gang activity in 1960s Lincoln Square, but there’s an emotional truth to the story of star-crossed lovers Tony (Richard Beymer) and Maria (Natalie Wood), who comes from a Puerto Rican immigrant family.

This is an interesting list, but
Why wasn't the movie "Klute", starring Don Sutherland, included in this list?

West Side Story, while it's fiction, is also based on certain realities. Sure, I know that in real life, gangs don't go dancing through the streets, and that people don't necessarily fall in love at first sight, but, there were gangs on the upper west side of Manhattan at that time, plus rumbles, that involved fisticuffs and switchblade knives, rather than guns, racial/ethnic tensions, did proliferate, a lot.

In reality, however, even if people do fall in love at first sight, it still takes a long time for it to grow and develop into something really, really substantial, based on mutual trust, love, respect, friendship, and responsibility towards each other.
