EW Lists...

Their choices for the 10 greatest musicals ...

1. Guys & Dolls
2. Gypsy
3. Sweeney Todd : The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
4. Oklahoma!
5. West Side Story
6. Cabaret
7. A Chorus Line
8. Rent
9. Carousel
10. Book of Mormon

Really? Guy and Dolls? I've seen the film and on stage and yes, it's a good musical. But No. 1 with West Side Story at No. 5? Who made these decisions?

Definitely a couple of odd choices. Sweeney Todd? Higher than West Side Story? Whoever made the list must really like black comedy.

I don't think Gypsy is as good either and I find the fact that Book of Mormon on the list at all peculiar.

I haven't seen Gypsy, but from what I know of it I do find it somewhat odd for it to claim the second spot. In some ways I feel a certain loyalty to The Book of Mormon, as I am a Mormon, but on the other hand, I still haven't decided if the musical is really anything flattering and positive. I definitely haven't been impressed by what I've heard about some of the content. And in any case, it's hard for me to imagine it being voted one of the ten best musicals ever.

There are so many landmark musicals that this list misses - Show Boat, South Pacific, Fiddler on the Roof, Hair, Chicago,Porgy and Bess, etc.

Yeah, seriously. I would certainly be curious to know the reasoning behind the choices and placements picked.

I'm curious about the choices and placement selections too, Insaneladybug, but
I guess it's to each their own. I wish West Side Story had been picked for the number one spot, or at least been closer to the top spot, if one gets the drift.

I've never seen any of the above-mentioned musicals except Fiddler on the Roof, Hair and Showboat.
I have heard that South Pacific and Porgy and Bess were good. I admittedly didn't like Fiddler on the Roof very much, however.

I think even if you didn't like Fiddler you'd have to include it simply because of the subject matter. It's the first large scale musical that I know of that celebrates the Jewish culture although I suspect that there were smaller versions done in Yiddish theatre.

You've made a good point regarding Fiddler on the Roof, petzipellepingo. Thanks for the heads up.

You're probably right, Insaneladybug!
Sweeney Todd was a good movie, but I certainly wouldn't have put it up higher than West Side Story! To each their own, I guess.
